What makes the perfect shed – a buyer’s guide

What makes the perfect shed – a buyer’s guide

15 January 2024

If you are in the market for a new wooden shed in Lincolnshire but aren’t sure what to look for, our guide to what makes a quality shed will help you decide.

A wooden shed is so much more than somewhere to store tools. It can be your work-from-home space, your family’s entertaining area, your gardening retreat or simply your bolt hole away from the hustle and bustle of daily life where you can be creative. It makes sense then to get it right when making the decision to buy a new shed. But what should you look for? At Sutton Sheds, we have been building quality sheds for over 30 years and here are our tips for the perfect shed.

Materials

We specialise in building quality wooden sheds from high grade timber that is sourced sustainably. All our builds are finished with a choice of tongue and groove matching board cladding or tongue and groove loglap board cladding in redwood to provide a timeless and attractive appearance, suitable for any setting. We use non-pressure treated timber (see why here) which we spray with a water-based, environmentally-friendly protector that lasts for up to 18months.

Roof construction and style

The quality of a shed roof reflects the quality of the shed and can be an indicator of an inferior shed. Our wooden pent sheds and apex sheds are constructed using 16mmX120mm cladding and are finished with a high grade 20kg roofing felt. We also offer our wooden sheds with a choice of apex rooves or pent roovesWhat is an apex shed? and What is a pent shed? explain the differences to help you decide which will suit your needs.

Shed foundations

Any timber garden building will only be as good as the base it sits on and a solid foundation is vital for your building to have the maximum longevity possible. Foundations can be constructed from a variety of material, with a concrete bas being the strongest. At Sutton Sheds we do not install shed foundations but we can recommend a trustworthy contractor if you require one.

Customisation

Most standard ‘off the peg’ sheds and garden buildings come in set sizes, with popular sizes being 6' x 4', 7' x 5', 8' x 6', 10' x 6', 10' x 8', and 12' x 8'. However, where your available space or the requirements you have for the building need a different size or even configuration of windows and/or doors, the ability to customise your shed is important to get exactly what you want. At Sutton Sheds, we offer a bespoke, custom build service to clients and we are happy to work with you to make your vision a reality.

Company expertise and reliability

Any garden building, whether it is a wooden shed, a workshop, potting shed or summerhouse, is an extension of your home and living space. It is essential to work with a company that you can trust, that has impeccable credentials and expertise. Ask the questions – do they have experience? what are their reviews like? is their team friendly? will they listen to you? can you work with them?
