At Sutton Sheds, we’ve been crafting timber sheds, wooden workshops, and wooden garages for over 40 years here in Lincolnshire, so we know just how challenging the British weather can be. But, with a few simple checks and treatments, you can protect your shed from the damp, frost, and wind — and keep it looking its best for years to come.
Here are our top tips for winter-proofing your wooden shed — plus what can happen if you skip them.
Check shed for leaks and repair damage
Start by giving your shed a good inspection. Look for cracks, loose boards, and particularly any small gaps where rainwater could find its way in. Don’t forget to check the roof felt too, and around any windows or doors.
If you do spot any damage, repair it straight away. Use a high-quality wood filler for minor issues and replace any rotting panels. A watertight roof is your first line of defence against Lincolnshire’s wet winter weather, so check the roof and replace the felt if necessary.
What will happen if you don’t - even the smallest leak can lead to damp timber, mould growth, and eventually structural damage. This is especially true of timber sheds that see regular use through winter.
Re-treat the shed timber
Before the frosts set in, give your shed a fresh coat of preservative or weatherproofing treatment. Focus on the base and lower panels where rain tends to splash.
We recommend re-treating wooden sheds and wooden garages at least once a year. It helps the timber resist moisture, prevents rot, and keeps the wood nourished throughout the cold months.
Our guide to wood treatment and protection for your garden buildings has some great advice.
What will happen if you don’t - untreated timber absorbs moisture like a sponge. Over time, this can cause swelling, warping, and decay — cutting years off your shed’s lifespan.
Improve shed ventilation
It might seem odd to talk about airflow in winter, but ventilation is key to preventing condensation, whatever the time of year. If your shed gets damp inside, open a vent or window for short periods on dry days to let moisture escape.
If your shed is well-ventilated, any tools, furniture, and machinery stored inside it will be protected from rust and mould.
What will happen if you don’t - without proper airflow, your shed will develop a musty smell, damp patches on the walls, and corrosion on metal items.
Protect the floor of the shed
Check that your shed is raised slightly off the ground. A solid, well-drained base prevents rainwater from pooling underneath. Inside, consider adding rubber mats or wooden boards for extra insulation and comfort.
Choosing the correct foundations for your shed is crucial and What foundations do I need for my shed? will explain why.
What will happen if you don’t - if water seeps into the floor, it can rot from the inside out — leaving you with soft, uneven floorboards that could deteriorate and crumble underfoot, and a damp interior.
Keep the area clear surrounding the shed
While many of us focus on keeping the inside of our shed tidy and in order, it’s just as important to work on the outside. Taking the time to clear accumulated leaves and branches, as well as moss from the roof and gutters, will help air circulation. Trim back shrubs and plants nearby too; this will reduce the chance of damp establishing in the shed walls.
What will happen if you don’t – when moisture becomes trapped around the base of the shed, it will speed up timber decay and attract unwanted pests looking for shelter.
Keep your shed winter-ready
A well-maintained, quality timber shed or wooden garage will serve you faithfully for decades. Carrying out this pre-winter prep will save you a lot of trouble later, and protect the tools, furniture, and memories you store inside.
