As we get near to the end of summer and thoughts turn to autumn and beyond, we look at steps you should be taking to ensure your shed survives the bad weather ahead.
| ACTION | HOW TO | FOLLOW UP |
|
Clear and tidy the shed |
Remove contents, sweep shed thoroughly removing dirt and debris | Discard clutter/unused items and anything that can attract pests or moisture |
| Organise the inside of the shed | Store tool in boxes off the floor or on shelves. Label boxes. | Check every month for signs of damp |
| Inspect for damage/check insulation | Look for holes and cracks in and around corners, windows, and doors | Fill any cracks or holes with wood filler/silicone. Install draft excluders and/or foam tape if necessary. Recheck throughout the winter months |
| Look for rotting timber | Examine the shed for soft, discoloured or crumbling wood | Cut out and replace any damaged wood |
| Assess the roof | Check for sagging or ripped felt | Repair or replace felt. Recheck after snowfall and always clear snow from the roof |
| Waterproof the shed | Apply a wood preservative or a paint/stain to waterproof the timber. Pay special attention to windows/doors/joints/base areas | Reapply annually before winter |
| Check drainage | Check ground slope and gutters | Water should drain away from the shed and gutters should be clear so add gravel to aid soakaway and clear guttering |
|
Carry out a ventilation check |
Check any vents are not blocked or obstructed. Use moisture absorbers to combat condensation | Check regularly for signs of mould and musty odours. Air the shed regularly by opening windows |
| Check shed security | Oil all hinges on doors and windows, checking they shut securely and fastenings are strong and weather-resistant | Consider installing an alarm or motion-sensitive security lights |
