Garden shed maintenance – how to look after a wooden pent roof shed

12 May 2025

Our handy checklist will guide you through essential maintenance tasks to keep your wooden pent roof shed in tip top condition.

A wooden pent roof shed is a valuable addition to any garden, providing storage space and an aesthetic appeal that complements outdoor settings. However, to ensure its longevity and functionality, regular maintenance is essential, as wooden sheds are susceptible to weather damage, pests, and general wear and tear.

Regular roof inspection

The pent roof is a critical component of your shed, designed to allow rainwater to run off efficiently. However, exposure to harsh weather conditions can cause deterioration over time, so regular and thorough inspections are vital that include the following:

•    Check for leaks - inspect the roof for signs of leaks, particularly after heavy rain. Look for damp spots on the interior ceiling or walls.

•    Examine roofing material - if your shed has felt, ensure it is intact and not lifting or torn. Replace any damaged sections promptly, following our guide to shed roofing.

•    Clear debris - remove leaves, twigs, and other debris that may accumulate on the roof, as these can trap moisture and lead to rot.

Exterior wood treatment

Since wooden sheds are exposed to the elements, they require periodic treatment to prevent rot, warping, and insect infestation.

•    Apply wood preservative - use a high-quality wood preservative or weatherproofing treatment at least once a year to protect against moisture and UV damage.

•    Check for signs of rot - inspect the shed’s exterior for soft, discoloured, or crumbling wood, which could indicate rot. Treat or replace affected sections immediately.

•    Repaint or re-stain - if your shed has a painted or stained finish, reapply as needed to maintain its protective barrier.

After manufacture and before installation, all Sutton Sheds’ garden buildings are treated with products from the Protek range of water-based preservatives. Our guide to wood treatment and protection for garden buildings tells you lots more.

Door and window maintenance

Properly functioning doors and windows are essential for security and weather protection and the following steps should be carried out regularly:

•    Inspect hinges and locks - ensure that hinges, locks, and latches are free of rust and operate smoothly. Lubricate with oil where necessary.

•    Check for warping - wooden doors and window frames can expand or contract with temperature changes, causing misalignment. Adjust or sand down areas as needed, to ensure a proper fit.

•    Seal gaps - apply weather stripping or silicone around windows and doors to prevent drafts and moisture ingress.

Gutter and drainage check

If your shed has gutters, keeping them clear will prevent water damage. Proper drainage is also essential to prevent water pooling around the shed.

•    Clean gutters - remove leaves and debris from gutters to ensure efficient water runoff.

•    Check for blockages - ensure that downpipes direct water away from the shed’s base, to prevent foundation damage.

•    Improve drainage - if water pools around the shed, consider adding gravel or adjusting the ground slope to promote runoff.

Floor and foundation care

A strong foundation is essential for the stability and durability of your shed and it’s important to understand what foundations a shed needs.

•    Inspect flooring - check for soft spots or sagging, which could indicate rot or structural issues.

•    Keep the base dry - ensure the area around the shed is well-drained to prevent moisture from seeping into the wooden base.  Consider placing your shed on a concrete pad or raised platform.

Interior organisation and airflow

Proper ventilation and organisation help prevent mould growth and structural stress.

•    Check for condensation - ensure adequate ventilation to prevent mould and mildew buildup. Open windows periodically to improve airflow.

•    Organise storage - avoid overloading shelves or stacking heavy items against walls, which can cause warping over time.

•    Monitor for pests - look for signs of rodents or insects and take preventive measures, such as sealing gaps and using repellents.

Seasonal maintenance tasks

•    Before winter - apply an extra coat of wood treatment, check roof integrity, and seal any gaps to keep cold and moisture out.

•    Spring check-up - inspect for any winter damage, clear debris, and refresh any protective coatings.
