Are timber sheds any good?

Are timber sheds any good?

22 July 2024

We may be biased but we believe timber sheds make the best sheds. In the interest of fairness, however, our latest guide looks at the pros and cons of metal sheds, plastic sheds and timber sheds to help you decide for yourself.

The pros and cons of plastic sheds

Pros

Cons

Maintenance-free – plastic sheds do not need regular treatment to protect them from the elements

Cannot be painted to coordinate with your garden or home

Will not rust or rot

Will not bear much weight on the walls so items will need to be stored freestanding

Cost-effective as a temporary storage solution

Sunlight will cause fading

Easy home assembly

Overtime, sunlight will make the plastic brittle, leading to it snapping

Prone to condensation – contents can become mouldy and damp

Lightweight so need to be firmly anchored

Not environmentally-friendly

The pros and cons of metal sheds

Pros

Cons

Cost effective

Temperature inside will change with weather

Sturdy/heavy duty

Condensation can cause corrosion (particularly in coastal areas)

Secure

Will need to be firmly anchored in exposed locations

Fire resistant

Stark, utilitarian aesthetic

The pros and cons of wooden sheds

Pros

Cons

Will last for decades with the correct treatment

Higher initial cost

Can be insulated

Regular, ongoing maintenance required

Customisable making it a versatile option

Less secure than other options

Different styles available

Can be prone to rot and insect infestation

Choice of cladding profiles

Timber is a natural insulator so resists external temperatures making it cool in the summer and warm in the winter

Will not suffer from condensation

Classic aesthetic to suit any home or garden

Can be painted to change the aesthetic if tastes change

Environmentally responsible – renewal and sustainable

While the initial cost of a wooden pent shed and apex shed can be more expensive than a metal or a plastic shed, you need to consider how long the shed will last (usually decades). Likewise, the long term costs of regular and ongoing maintenance, can be offset against the life expectancy of the shed.

Ultimately, the type of shed you choose will depend on its purpose and what you are looking for. Is a maintenance-free plastic shed what you need, or a fire-resistant metal building? If you are looking for a good, long term option that offers versatility and can be multipurpose, a wooden shed may be right for you. If it is, we can help.

Timber sheds from Sutton Sheds

All our timber sheds are manufactured to order, by our family run business in Lincolnshire. These solid, durable garden sheds require no anchoring to keep them safe and secure, although we do recommend an appropriate foundation base is installed prior to delivery (see What foundations do I need for my shed?)

We offer a choice of wooden pent sheds or apex sheds, with single or double doors, as well as a range of other garden buildings including summerhouses, workshops and timber garages.

If our standard timber sheds aren’t quite right for you – perhaps you need a different size or layout – we offer a bespoke, custom build service. Working to your plans, or working with you to design what you need, we can manufacture the shed of your dreams.

As an extra, all our sheds can be insulated – just let us know at the point of ordering – and they can be finished in a choice of over 80 colours from the Protek Royal Exterior range.

If we can help you with your next timber shed, please contact us by email or give the team a call on 01526 342777 today.
