While the traditional garden shed is the ultimate source of garden storage, the wooden workshop is that and so much more – ideal for working in, be it on hobbies such as modelmaking, or running a crafting business, a workshop is a dedicated space ideal for large projects.
Why choose a wooden workshop?
Being manufactured from quality timber allows our wooden workshops to ‘breathe’. Offering a look that goes with any style of home or garden, a wooden workshop will manage moisture better than a metal or plastic equivalent and will provide natural insulation. At Sutton Sheds, our bespoke custom build service gives our customers the flexibility to customise their workshop to their exact needs – to find out more, read Custom workshops in Lincolnshire from Sutton Sheds.
Planning permission for your workshop
It is always advisable to check the Government’s Planning Portal before buying and installing a garden workshop. By entering your postcode, you will quickly find out any specific regulations your local authority may have in place. All our Sutton Sheds’ workshops comply with accepted dimensions and will not need planning permission. There are some exceptions and you should read Does my shed need planning permission? as a starting point before you commit to a new workshop. Generally, though, if the workshop is under 2.5m tall and takes up less than 50% of your garden, you won’t need planning permission.
Choosing the size and style of wooden workshop
It’s worth remembering that, by their very nature, workshops are usually bigger than sheds. At Sutton Sheds, we know that size matters, so our wooden workshops come with double doors as standard for ease of entry, as well as a more generous standing height. We manufacture a standard, apex-roof workshop in 10 different sizes that range from 10x8 to 20x12. If you require a different size, configuration or features, our custom build workshops can be designed for your exact needs.
Materials and construction for a workshop
Our standard workshops are made from 20mm tongue-and-grooved log lap cladding, as tongue and grooved cladding produces a tighter, stronger seal. We do not use pressure-treated or dipped timber - read Why we don’t use pressure treated timber for our sheds to find out more. All our structures are treated with a water-based preservative prior to installation that will provide protection for up to 18 months. All our workshops feature a solid timber frame, and a weatherproof roof finished with a quality polyester roof felt.
Foundations and flooring for a garden workshop
The best, highest quality garden structure is only as good as its foundations, and your workshop will be longer-lasting if sited on a strong, solid base. Common options include concrete, paving stones, or a timber frame base. We do not provide foundations and it is the responsibility of our customers to ensure an appropriate base is fitted prior to installation – we can recommend trusted contractors who can help with this. What foundations do I need for my shed? has more information.
As for flooring in a wooden workshop, thicker timber boards offer better insulation and strength, particularly if you’ll be using heavy tools or machinery. At Sutton Sheds, our floors are constructed from 16mm boards.
Heating, lighting, and security for a wooden workshop
If you’ll be using your workshop year-round, it makes sense to have it insulated and to think about installing electricity to allow you to power lights and heating in the winter. Compliance with building regs is mandatory and extension leads should only be used as a short term, temporary measure. Adding electricity to a garden shed should only be carried out by a professional.
Security is also a priority, particularly if your workshop houses expensive equipment or tools. Strong locks, security lights, and an alarm system will help. Our article How to keep your shed secure has lots more helpful tips too.
